I'm obsessed with this pretty little golf man
Plus crying over Miley, and two movies about love
“Hannah, your golf boyfriend is doing so well!” the text from the group chat said.
I thought for a minute. Ben was indeed out playing golf. Ben has, in fact, been on an absolute golfing tear for about six months now. A couple weeks ago, I walked out of my own bedroom to find a putting green rolled out along our hallway and Benjamin practicing his putt in the sacred home where I take my daily naps. This is a man who has had both a vegan and a triathlon phase. This is a man who once told me it would be fun to get up at 6 a.m. in Paris for a RUN! [I firmly believe that Paris at 6 a.m. is none of my business!] This is a man who ran the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours and 37 minutes. [For those of you tracking at home, that made him the 19th overall American male that year.] In short, this is a man who knows how to obsess and achieve.
So yes, Ben was obviously golfing. But the texter was not with him at the time. So why was he telling me how Ben was doing at the golf?
Then I realized: He wasn’t talking about my husband; he was talking about my new crush, Viktor Hovland!!
The way I described Viktor Hovland [alternatively “Vickie” and “Hovie” in our house] to my mom the first time was, “Like a perfect little wooden doll who wears perfect little color-blocked outfits!!!!!!” I mean, doesn’t he look like Pinocchio if Pinocchio was — pardon me so very much for this — hot?? He looks like he left his spot in One Direction in order to pursue his golfing career! He is, there is no other way to say it: Cute!
Anyhoo, today he won the PGA Tour Championship! [Some of which I watched around my naptime.] Congrats, Vickie!
What can I say, I have a knack for picking winners!
And, with that, I have a question for you: What activity have you taken up in your adulthood that you never dreamed you would? Like, it was for grownups! It was not something you’d ever do! Ben’s is obviously golf. Mine might be . . . having four different Weather apps I check several times a day?
Today — outside of golf — lol who am I — we’re covering:
Two movies about love! One “bad,” one good, both a delightful time.
Two new pop songs that I will be playing on repeat for the rest of the summer.
Watching - Love Again
I watched this on my flight home after seeing Mom and Dad last week, and I did not hate it! [Did I even tear up a couple of times? That’s between me and the woman sitting next to me in seat 28B!]
Is it good? Nah. This is a movie in which an unemployed children’s book illustrator can afford a spacious apartment with a finished rooftop in downtown NYC. This is a movie in which a man who works at NPR is also 6’3” and absolutely yoked; where your favorite burger joint names a whole-ass burger after you. This is a movie where it’s cute to kiss first thing in the morning after spending your first night together as if you don’t both have trash-can breath. The idea that two people spent all night talking in a park in New York City in winter — girl, that isn’t even legal! We’re dealing with a script containing the line, “You have a vitamin D deficiency. *wink* *wink*”
It’s not Dostoevsky, is all I’m saying! This movie has a 24% Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes and in many ways, it shows.
But you know what else? It also has a 91% Audience Score! And that makes equal sense to me!! It was fun! They had zero chemistry, but they were hot! They were cute, they were in the neighborhood of funny, it was all rom-com tropes, and who doesn’t love a rom-com trope once in a while!??
And, most of all, Celine Dion was here! Playing the very stern fairy godmother archetype. “This is a big problem,” she deadpans when the Guy reveals he has lied to the Girl by impersonating her dead fiance. [I told you it’s not Dostoevsky!]
Anyhoo, if you’re looking for a dumb, sweet, cozy rom-com that you haven’t yet seen a million times, give it a try. I can’t lie, I’ll probably watch it again!
Has anyone else seen it?? Nobody I know has seen it! Tell me your thoughts!
Watching - You Hurt My Feelings
This movie has the opposite Rotten Tomatoes thing from Love Again. It has a 94% Critics’ Score and a 64% Audience Score. I’d give it a 75%!
It was smart, incisive, funny, sweet, a little slow, and quite profound. Even though the scenes take their time, sometimes not adding up to all that much on their own, the all-star cast carries it along nicely.
It’s profound because it’s about love and what matters, but also about the question that haunts all of us when we put our heads on our pillows at night, that we can’t look at directly in the face: Am I actually any good? Like, at what I chose to do with my life? Am I a fraud? Does everyone else know it but me?
It’s a movie about being embarrassed. It’s a movie about how the people who love us are the reason we exist, and our capacity to love them and all their foibles, too, is really what makes us so wonderful.
Highly recommend.
Anyone seen it, too, and have thoughts to share?
Listening - Two New Songs From Two Pop Queens!
Miley and Selena — my generation of pop stars — both released a new single this week! To me, Miley’s is much, much better, but Selena’s songs tend to grow on me like a bag of M&M’s [not that good at first and then suddenly the bag is gone?] so I’m giving it some more time.
Miley is incredibly talented and, honestly, it’s underrated how talented she is. Her album SHE IS COMING is one of my most listened to in the last few years.
And, girl, this music video had me CRYINGGG!
THANK YOU, MILEY!!
Selena’s song is…catchy? I mean, it’s not “Come and Get It” [my favorite Selena song] but it’s definitely an earworm and already firmly stuck in my head.
The most important question here [it’s not that important]: Is this a smokescreen to throw us off the rumors that she and “Yes Chef” Boy are dating???
“I’ll be single soon,” Selena sings. “LOL you’re such a tease, Selena!” we all scream.
Discuss!!
Four weather apps!! 😍😍 The Yahoo one is my favorite for the opening page. Little general information on the graphics, just one large scene of the weather, including lightening strikes for storms. Actual moving weather!!!
Oooo I can’t wait to watch You Hurt My Feelings!!! And I think the other one will be Sergey’s cup of tea. 😂🤩
