I've honestly been in survival mode but raising money for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund through my custom t-shirts (shameless plug) and helping people create things (often protest signs or pins or shirts) at work every day fills my soul.
Agh I love Mike Birbiglia but idk if my heart could take a dark grief narrative rn. Okay, you've convinced me to watch Hacks, although I think I saw they're doing another season?? Perhaps it was a joke on Twitter so my sources are not confirmed.
No, YOU ARE RIGHT!! Hacks was renewed for a fifth season and that news totally blew past me! A friend texted me about it like two seconds after I hit send on this so I immediately added a correction to it on Substack haha. I'M SO HAPPY!!!
I will say the Birbigs grief narrative wasn't overwhelming. It's just about dealing with his dad having had a stroke though, so it's not light and easy -- though he never is lol
Love these things you're doing, and thank you for your shameless plug !
To answer your question: I found three ways to volunteer on my own. I mentor students in the grad school program I went through, I fundraise, shop, cook and distribute meals for the unhoused in LA (small org) and I serve on the board of a 501c that raises funds for inner city youth to play sports.
I find that grounding myself in the local-est of local things gives me meaning and connection. Also - I feel like this is key - except when I really need it, I gave up almost entirely on both X and BlueSky. It was just too much information.
Also speaking of WCK, we interviewed Jose Andres on Rapid Response awhile back and he was a delight as always (another thing I do when things get hard? As you say, bury myself in work / shameless self-promotion! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7-jvcdQu5I&t=1239s)
The combo of focusing your volunteering on local communities + cutting out unnecessary social media IS mental health. That's so good. Also, that's a LOT of volunteering! Dare I say, role model ?!
LMAO @ TikTok thinking you're a gay man.
