Emmy Predictions + Goodbye to the Queen
TV's biggest night is tonight! Here's who I think will win, should win, and all the stuff to watch out for.
September 2022 really said, “Y’all have had enough of the ‘depressing news cycle,’ I’m gonna give you the ‘batty, bonkers, deranged, and unhinged news cycle!!” This clip of Hoda awkwardly transitioning from news of the Queen’s death to NFL football was literally a meme before it even happened.
So this week, we’re focusing on what matters most — TELEVISION!!!! People used to joke that the Emmys were just the Oscars but for uglier people. But now TV is the movies, and I’m ready to see some awards and upsets and beautiful gowns!
Regardless of who wins tonight, I’d love to hear from you: What was YOUR “best show of the year”? YOU are the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and YOU are doling out awards today! What show did you watch this year that unexpectedly became an all-time favorite? What show stood out for how it hooked you? What did you enjoy most? Whatever way you’d define “best,” I’d love to hear it! Mine is Severance!
Drop a comment and let us know: What wins your Emmy?
Note: I’ll update this post tonight and tomorrow as awards roll in so you can see how I did in my predictions!
ROYAL WATCH - Farewell to the Queen
A quick aside about the Queen.
I found out the Queen had passed away while I was on a trip with Ben’s company. His coworker from the UK said, with a stricken face, “When they ask where I was when the Queen died, I’ll have to say ‘Bobbing in the Caribbean Sea!’” The French coworkers simply kept smoking and speaking French, so for all I know, they were sad. Or not sad! Hard to tell with the French! The Americans all screamed, “OH MY GODDDDD!!!! THIS IS INSAAAANE!!!!!” and then dropped the subject forever. The South African said, “I could not care less.”
Meanwhile, on Twitter, Former Colonies had a lot to remind us about the Monarchy Writ Large and how it’s been a vehicle of oppression, murder, and control, and it might be time to do away with it? And honestly, I believe they’re right!
Whatever your thoughts on the monarchy, it’s a historical and solemn moment that the entire world is sharing, and could be an opportunity for listening and growth. At least we can all agree that the worst part is we now have to deal with King Charles III and his pompatic displays. Ugh!
What to Know About the Emmys!
It’s Emmys time! The E in EGOT! Television’s biggest night! The show is airing live on NBC tonight at 8 p.m. ET, and hosted by none other than TV’s most reliable fixture, Kenan Thompson.
The most-nominated show this year was my personal fave, Succession, coming in at a whopping 25. Succession was trailed by The White Lotus (20), Hacks (17), Euphoria (16), Squid Game (14), and Barry (14). Some of the winners have already been announced this week — for behind-the-scenes work — but they save the biggest awards for the live show.
Here are a few things to know about the Emmys tonight and then my predictions — which I will update as the wins come in!
1. My three favorite *new* shows were Emmy nom faves.
Not to make this about me [but I will], but I been out here evangelizing!!
The White Lotus CLEANED UP. They got 20 nominations and have already won in the “back of house” categories. In the “big categories,” the girls are all here! Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney are competing for Supporting Actress. And Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy, and Steve Zahn are competing in the Supporting Actor category. They all deserve!!!
Read my review of The White Lotus, which was my INAUGURAL POST!
Yellowjackets got seven nominations, including Lead Actress for queen Melanie Lynskey, Supporting Actress for mysterious witch [complimentary] Christina Ricci, Oustanding Drama Series [the “Best Picture” of the Emmys], and more.
Read my review of Yellowjackets here!
Severance got 14 noms!!! Including Actor/Supporting Actor for Adam Scott, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken; Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette; Drama Series; and several others, including main title theme music. It already won for main title design and music composition. YAS!!
Read my review of Severance here!
2. My favorite *ongoing* show continues its unbroken reign of terror!!
Our favorite assholes have done it again! Fourteen of Succession’s 25 nominations were for acting awards — i.e. this was a real “You get a nom, you get a nom, EVERYONE GETS A NOM!” situation.
I have yet to write a review for Succession, mainly because I try to stick to new shows, and I’ve been on that Succession beat for years. But I’m feeling some power rankings coming for the next season!
3. Squid Game is the first foreign language film to be nominated for Best Drama!
The hype is real! Squid Game is worth it! Give me Season 2 now!!! [link to my review!]
4. Popular shows Yellowstone and This Is Us got snubbed.
Okay, call me the Academy of Television or whatever because I also did not watch/like these shows.🥶 I did make an honestly heroic, six-episode effort to watch This is Us and truly could not stomach it. Sorry to Mandy Moore!
With Yellowstone, I’m just…not that interested?? I have Succession and Game of Thrones if I want messed-up family drama!! And I know that’s a ME problem, y’all! Yellowstone is the most popular show in America — literally — and got completely ignored at the Emmys. Some say, and I have to agree, that this smacks of some coastal elite bullsh*t.
*whispers* But also…like…is the show…actually…good??

How DID Station Eleven get snubbed??!?
Your description of different nationalities in your group responding to the death of the queen made me laugh quite irreverently. 🤣🤣
